We’ll explore how to tell your story – the unique role your organization plays in your community and intended benefits it will deliver through proposed work – so your narrative matches funder priorities and requirements. Beginning with an overview of what’s important to consider when developing a project idea and how it could be funded\, we’ll focus on using storytelling techniques to effectively carry a consistent narrative through key elements in a grant proposal and ensure the budget supports proposed work. You’ll leave this session understanding how to use language that speaks to funder concerns within a given proposal structure and approach relationships with funders\, whether the proposal was successful or rejected. \n\n\n\nWorkshop Approach \n\n\n\nThe session will emphasize strengthening grant-readiness and application skills\, storytelling techniques\, funder alignment strategies\, and foundational budget development skills through presentation\, hands-on practice\, peer discussion\, and problem-solving guidance. \n\n\n\nKey Takeaways \n\n\n\nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n– Apply storytelling techniques to effectively convey organizational mission\, vision\, and impact and describe a funding request. \n\n\n\n– Build a clear budget aligned with proposed project goals and funder requirements. \n\n\n\n– Assess funder priorities and tailor proposals for stronger alignment. \n\n\n\n– Strengthen draft application sections through hands-on exercises and group discussion and feedback. \n\n\n\n**Coffee and tea will be provided. Whether you’re new to the board or looking to sharpen your skills\, this two-hour virtual workshop will give you the practical knowledge and tools you need to fulfill your role and support the nonprofit organization you’re leading. \n\n\n\nDesigned specifically for nonprofit board members\, this workshop covers the full landscape of board leadership so you can show up as the leader your organization needs. This is also a chance to connect with fellow board members and other nonprofits.  \n\n\n\nWhat We’ll Cover: \n\n\n\n\nGovernance vs. management\n\n\n\nLegal duties of a nonprofit board\n\n\n\nBoard roles and responsibilities vs. staff roles\n\n\n\nSetting clear expectations for board members\n\n\n\nKey policies boards are responsible for\n\n\n\nBylaws\, board manuals\, and board packets\n\n\n\n\nBy the end of this workshop\, you will: \n\n\n\n\nHave a clear understanding of your legal obligations in your role as a board member\n\n\n\nKnow how to distinguish board responsibilities from staff responsibilities\n\n\n\nBe equipped with practical tools that you can implement with your board right away\n\n\n\n\nExecutives and nonprofit staff are also welcome — understanding how your board governs is a powerful tool for organizational leadership. \n\n\n\nLocation: This workshop will be delivered over Zoom. \n\n\n\nYour Trainer: Beth Bray\, CFRE \n\n\n\nA seasoned nonprofit leader and Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE)\, Beth Bray has 20 years of experience in nonprofit management spanning fundraising\, operations\, and board development. Her background includes leadership roles — both staff and volunteer — at organizations in the healthcare\, conservation\, social services\, and higher education sectors. \n\n\n\nBeth has experienced board governance from both sides of the table. As a volunteer\, she has served in leadership roles on the board of directors at CASA of Humboldt (including as president and treasurer)\, the League of Women Voters of Humboldt County\, and Wild Souls Ranch\, where she served on the board during an organizational transition. As a nonprofit management professional\, she has also had the privilege of working alongside high-functioning boards at Six Rivers Planned Parenthood and the Northcoast Regional Land Trust and draws on those experiences for best practices. \n\n\n\nAs founder and principal of Add Lightness Consulting\, Beth partners with small to mid-size nonprofits on board development\, fundraising strategy\, facilitation\, and organizational planning.
